Everything You Need to Know about USB Drives – USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0

Everyone probably knows what USB stands for, universal serial bus. It’s one of those abbreviations that’s so commonplace, its become part of our daily life. Like the name implies, USB is truly universal. It is one of the most versatile communication protocols in the world today. Encompassing devices of all shapes and sizes, USB connectors are found on computers, televisions, photo frames and whatnot! Originally started as an attempt to facilitate easier connections between devices and computers, it has now become the standard connection interface. Now, when you go out to get yourself a new device, lets say an external hard drive, you’ve probably come across a few that boast of “USB 3.0 support”. Also, these devices are slightly more expensive. So what’s it all about?
The tech world has a penchant for adding larger numbers to software and hardware alike, and often, it’s hardly a change. But that’s not the case this time around, USB 3.0 is quite an improvement over its predecessor. Although introduced back in 2008, USB 3.0 devices and capable computers have started breaching the mainstream market only in the recent past. It’s hardly been long since USB 3.0 devices don’t burn large holes in your pocket.

USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0USB 1.0 and 1.1

Back in 1996, USB 1.0 was introduced with a max. data transfer rate of 12Megabit/s. It had quite a few limitations and didn’t really catch on. Almost 2 years later in August 1998, USB 1.1 was introduced. It fixed some limitations of connectivity and made the protocol more practical. This was the earliest version of USB that caught on. Devices and computers started using it and the then widely used serial ports began to see a decline.

USB 2.0

Again 2 years later, in 2000 USB 2.0 was released. It is still used today is one of the rare instances where technology doesn’t change for quite some time. So USB 2.0 brought with it a host of new features. The main one was of course, speed. USB 2.0 is capable of data transfer of 480 Mbits/sec or 60MB/sec. That meant it was almost 10 times faster than the previous version! It was thus dubbed “Hi-Speed”. USB 2.0 devices and computers flooded the market pretty soon and they became the standard connection protocol pretty soon. Until 2006, USB 2.0 was tweaked internally for more efficient power usage and other enhancements were made. Also, form factors and new connectors were added. In December 2006, one of the most important features used today was added. The feature was USB On-The-Go. This allowed USB devices to communicate with each other without requiring a full time host. To make it clearer, know how USB drives can be connected to tablet PC’s, PDA’s or other such devices? This is made possible because of USB On-The-Go. 2007 saw another very useful feature being intoduced, USB charging. Now devices could draw power and still transfer data effectively. In the years after, USB 2.0 was improved to consume less power and have in idle mode where they didn’t draw power. The last revision/upgrade to USB 2.0 was back in 2010.
USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0

USB 3.0

In 2008, USB 3.0 was released. It was capable of data transfers upto 5Gbits/sec or 625MB/sec, was more power efficient and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. USB 3.0 was termed as “SuperSpeed”. USB 3.0 ports look quite similar to USB 2.0 ports, but feature 9 pins instead of 4 found in 2.0. USB 3.0 operates in full-duplex mode, unlike USB 2.0 (half-duplex). This means, data upload and download can take place simultaneously without slowdown. When initially introduced, USB 3.0 didn’t see much mainstream support and industry biggies like Intel and Apple didn’t start USB 3.0 support until 2011. This significantly increased market adoption time. Most conglomerates decided to wait for data communication protocols like SATA 3.0, PCIe 3.0 and USB 3.0 to mature before extending their support. Even now, there are some driver problems and Windows 7 doesn’t natively support USB 3.0. But Windows 8 is slated to fully support USB 3.0.
USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0
Now, its rather well known that what you see is not always what you get. Case in point here is the USB interface. Although USB 2.0 claimed data transfer speeds of 60MB/s, practically you can get speeds of upto 40MB/s, even on computers with all the bells and whistles. USB 3.0 is capable of upto 625MB/s transfers, but in the real world, you’ll be lucky to see anything in excess of 300MB/s or so. This is mainly the fault of compatibility with the OS. Most drivers are still faulty and the full potential of USB 3.0 hasn’t been unlocked yet. So is it worth putting some extra moolah to get USB 3.0 capable controllers or devices? It probably is, according to us. You won’t be spending a truckload of money, yet you will have the advantages of speed and efficiency.  Getting a new computer? Make sure you get a motherboard capable of handling USB 3.0. If you’re not getting a new computer and still want to jump on the USB 3.0 bandwagon, get yourself a USB 3.0 external card that attaches to a PCIe slot on your motherboard and provides USB 3.0 ports. These cards come for around 50$ or so. Sure, the world isn’t switching to USB 3.0 this very moment, but it doesn’t hurt to be future proof, would it? Do you think it’s worth the upgrade? Drop us a line and let us know what you think about this USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 post.

Top pen tablets

1) Wacom Intuos 4 6X8-Inch Pen Tablet

 top pen tablets

Certainly the best tablet in the world has got to belong to Wacom, no surprise. Wacom Intuos is a complete professional designing tool that is almost used in every animation industry such as ILM, Pixar, Disney etc is because of the sleeky design and the comfort that it offers an artist while painting. It just eats away your time, makes sure you complete your work on time. The best part of  the Intuos4 is that offers a large workspace with a comfortable, lap sized tablet. It’s much more open to art compared to other tablets , with quick access buttons and a 3d mouse to boot! The scroll wheel is a nice addition and offers good control when zooming.
What’s so good about it?
- OLED screen shortcuts gives you better accessibility in case you forget the express key assignments.
- Like the previous versions Intuos 1,2 and 3, the pen is ergonomic and comfortable.
- It has more functionality because it now holds nibs. Convenient, since you’ll be needing to replace the nibs very often.
- Widescreen formats allowed in all sizes.

2) Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablettop pen tablets

The reason why I put this on top of the list is that, its one of the best Wacom tablets you can buy at a less price. The best deal an artist can get. The only drawback is that, the drawing panel is pretty small and takes a lot of time getting used to the tablet. And the rest, it has 1024 pressure points, you can achieve almost anything that an artist can. If you need to buy a tablet and you can’t afford to get an intuos, then this is the best option out there. Go get it if you are really upto it.

3) iBall Design Tablet PF1209top pen tablets

I’m actually proud to tell you that there is a tablet that tops the list that isn’t made by the Wacom. That is the iBall Design Pen tablet PF1029. The reason why this tablet is placed on the top third position is that, it is used by the professionals and incorporates alike, sophisticated technologies such as pen tilt support and a report rate capacity supports upto 200 rps. The design is sleek and satisfyingly thin to work on. Bad thing about PF1209 is that there are no custom colors and white is the only available color in the market so far. Another bad thing is that, its expensive (more than the Wacom products) and I’d insist you buy a Wacom instead if you are not looking for state of the art performance.

 4) Wacom Silver Bamboo Fun Tablettop pen tablets

It’s not the thing for pros, though, because it’s small. It has a small screen which restricts your brush strokes and flows, as they say, the bigger, the better. Working on this tablet will not allow you to do a high resolution sketching or painting. Despite its size, which is very tiny, this thing works like a charm. Simply put, this tablet needs to be loved for its simplicity and its convenience. Its something you could gift to a kid who loves drawing as a birthday present. He/she surely would love it.

5) Wacom Bamboo Pen And Touch Small

 top pen tablets

Finally we have Wacom Bamboo pen and Touch small tablet that has all the basic features a professional tablet needs to have. The only negative point about this tablet is that, the drawing panel is too small and gets too sloppy when working on a high resolution drawings as you need to repeat your strokes over times for achieving desired results. Perhaps this is the tab you can afford at a low price if you are just looking for a hobby just to fill that time up with something interesting in your daily routine life.
That’s all folks, hope this top pen tablets article helped you gain knowledge about the best and top pen tablets for digital artists out there.

Datawind Launches Two More New Aakash Tablets this Year – Ubislate 7+ & 7C

Datawind came up with two new tablets UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C. Datawind has already bagged the contract of  supplying low cost tablet ‘Aakash’ with the Indian Government.. Now, Datawind has launched two new tablets within the price range of Rs: 3000-4000. These tablets are still considered to be the amongst the cheapest tablets in the market. The two tablets were dubbed as UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C which have a 7-inch display with 800 x 480 pixels resolution, 256MB RAM, powered by Cortex A8 800 MHz processor, Wi-Fi, GPRS. These two tablets come with a 3200 mAh battery to give 180 minutes of continuous usage time. and are powered by Android Gingerbread 2.3.

New Datawind Tablets – UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C

The only major difference between these two new datawind tablets is UbiSlate 7+ comes with a 2GB of Internal memory and comes with a resistive touchscreen. Where as UbiSlate 7C has 4GB of internal memory and comes with a capacitive touchscreen. Both UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C  features Wi-Fi and GPRS with SIM and phone capability. The both tablets will come pre-loaded with Yahoo services due to a partnership with Yahoo India. Datawind has also teamed up with Indian carrier Aircel, where Aircel will offer UbiSlate owners a 2GB of GPRS data for just Rs: 100 per month. These both new datawind tablets will support using of 3G dongles in your tablet if you want to access faster internet speed.
new datawind tablets
Datawind has not cleared if the tablets will be provided an access to Google Play Store (Google Android Market). It would be really interesting to watch when exactly Datawind wants to release these two tablets in Indian market. Specially in the present worst case of not delivering 30 lakh aakash tablets in time. Datawind has already accepted that they are 2 weeks behind the Aakash exact delivery date. It would be really a prestige issue for Datawind to keep their promise for delivering Aakash tablet to atleast some important regions of India by May 2012.
new datawind tabletsAlso its very obvious to know the fact that, UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C are not been designed with quality or performance oriented. Instead these products rely on their low price tag in order to sell more in number. Most of the Indian customers are looking to purchase an Android tablet with not much fancy specs. So UbiSlate 7+ and UbiSlate 7C would be a good choice to launch in Indian market, before everyone forgets about the existence of Datawind or Aakash project. Including Micro USB and USB port are always there. So for any normal user in India, who want to put their hands on Android operating system can own these tablets.
Datawind, had already been into problems with their previous partners Quad Electronics (Hyderabad). The company claimed that it has already done 30 lakh booking for the new tablets to be launched in the market. Datawind CEO, Mr.Suneet Singh Tuli said “We will first deliver pre-bookings, which are over 30 lakh”. Mr.Tuli did not agree with the perception of tablet market growing in India. He said, “We are getting around 8,000 orders a day…” Mr.Tuli also said that Datawind will provide the upgraded Aakash to the government for approval. After the approval, Datawind will then deliver the one lakh tablets. And we already know Mr.Kapil Sibal, (Telecom Minister) had recently said that the upgraded version would be available in May.
Well, lets hope for the best.  Hope Datawind keeps their word of delivering Aakash tablets by the end of 2012 atleast. People are looking to put their hands on previously booked tablets, rather than buying these new Datawind tablets Ubislate 7+ & 7C.

Top 5 USB Drives – Best Pendrives in 2012

All of the drives mentioned here have similar read and write speeds (USB 3.0 level). Sure, some companies offer a little bit extra in the tune of backup or security software, but it’s ultimately price and looks that most of us base our purchases on. So, in no particular order, here are the top 5 USB drives you can buy:

5. Sony MicroVault Mach

Sony’s new range of USB 3.0 drives come in capacities of 4,8, 16 and 32GB. The exterior is built from a brushed-metal finish plastic and the drive looks rather snazzy. The actual USB connector is hidden via a spring mechanism that can be pushed out and retracted via spring mechanism. It’s a bit on the weaker side, but eliminates the need for a cap that can be so easily lost. It’s a good looking and solid performing USB pen drive that doesn’t offer any extras, but is good at what it’s supposed to do, store data. The 16GB version costs INR 1250.
 Top 5 USB Drives

4. Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0

Kingston is a brand very well known in portable date storage and it doesn’t disappoint with the new USB 3.0 pen drive. A solid, capless design makes the drive robust and easy to handle. It looks pretty good too, with multiple coloring in layers and is available in 8, 16, 32 and 64GB. The 16GB version retails for around INR 1450 and comes with a 5 year warranty, free tech support and the legendary reliability of Kingston.
 Top 5 USB Drives

3. ADATA S107

ADATA isn’t a very well known name but the new USB 3.0 pen drive is sure to generate some buzz. It might not look as good as other pendrives, but offers solid performance at a great price. Even better is the fact that the ADATA S107 is made out of a rubber material that is water and shock resistant. It is available in red or blue colors in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64GB. The 16GB version is a  good buy at INR 1300 if you’re prone to dropping stuff!
 Top 5 USB Drives

2. Corsair Flash Voyager

Corsair’s new pen drive another great performing pen drive that can take a beating. It’s water resistant and shockproof and can supposedly survive a stint in the washing machine! The downside is it doesn’t include any software and doesn’t have an integrated cap. The Flash Voyager is available in red or blue color in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and  64GB. If great transfer speeds and exceptional durability is what you need, grab the 16GB Flash Voyager at INR 1550.
Top 5 USB Drives

1. Transcend JetFlash 700

So the last few USB flash drives were all about the externals, meet the new Transcend JetFlash 700 which is all about what’s inside. Encased in a relatively inconspicuous black garb, the simple yet elegant JetFlash 700 offers excellent data transfer speeds along with extra features. The package includes data management and security software so there’s no worries of unwanted people snooping around your data and your data can be backed up and synchronized very easily. It’s not particularly rugged or good looking either and the cap is not integrated, but the software included and the excellent data transfer speeds justify its great price. The Transcend JetFlash 700 is available in 8, 16, 32 and 64GB and the 16GB version is a steal at INR 999!
Top 5 USB Drives
Keep in mind that even though USB 3.0 is supposed to be 10 times faster than USB 2.0 at peak, these flash drives will practically be only about 2-3 times faster than USB 2.0 flash drives. So expect read rates to be around 90-120MB/second and write rates to be around 80-100MB/second.

Sony Xperia Sola Preview – World’s First Floating Touch Phone

Back in January 2012, Sony Ericsson mobile communications was renamed to Sony mobile communications after Sony bought out Ericsson’s stake. Since then, just a handful of phones have been announced and even fewer have been released as of now. The first Sony-only branded phone was the Xperia S, a fairly competent smartphone that was praised for its screen and media capabilities but let down by some poor software. It was also Sony’s first dual core smartphone.
In the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2012, Sony announced a bunch of new smartphones covering pretty much every price range. Then came something completely new and revolutionary, Sony announced the Xperia Sola, the world’s first floating touch smartphone! Besides being a good looking, solid smartphone in the usual sense, the Xperia Sola offers a pretty cool new feature where you can control the UI just by hovering your finger over the screen instead of actually touching it. I’m sure it conjures up Minority Report-esque images in your head, it sure does in mine!
This floating touch technology is made possible by the usage of both self and mutual capacitance to detect a finger upto 20mm above the screen. Normally, just one of those sensors is used in touchscreen phones. Floating Touch was made in collaboration with Cypress Technologies and all software will work perfectly well with it. The only drawback is, not all applications are developed to respond to floating touch gestures. Also, multiple simultaneous gestures are possible only when your fingers touch the screen. For the floating touch, you will have to use just one finger. Besides this, the Xperia Sola works exactly like a high end touchscreen smartphone when used as such. As of now, only a few native applications like Sony’s inbuilt web browser respond to floating touch, but this number is sure to increase once the phone is launched sometime in Q2, 2012.
The floating touch technology allows for better control of the UI and gives mobile users access to hover events normally possible only on full size PC’s. This also opens up avenues for mobile gaming where floating touch offers another degree of control. The Xperia Sola also features live exclusive wallpapers that respond to floating touch. At launch, the Xperia Sola will come with Android 2.3, but an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is due in the summer. This is an important update because Android 4.0 allows third party applications to make use of hover events and floating touch can be used on most applications by then. The Xperia Sola also has features such as 3D surround sound (xLoud) and access to Sony’s new entertainment network. It runs on ST Ericsson’s NovaThoa U8500 SoC (system on a chip) which includes a dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor at 1Ghz, 512MB RAM and an ARM® Mali 400 GPU along with a built in HSPA modem.
Now, for the specs:
